In This Issue...

If you perceive that the knowledge-based economy is just around, you may not fuss about the fact that people desperately make most, if not all, of the things smart. The networks are directed to be broadband, intelligent, integrated, and personalized. In this issue, we focus on Intelligent Network and Intelligent Buildings, two of the greatest expectations, seemingly not closely connected, but both entitled "intelligent", as granted by a perfect combination of computer and communications.

Intelligent network is among the most important strategic objectives for China's telecom developments in 1990s. To date, construction of intelligent networks in China is taking shape. Intelligent networks, international, national, or local, all offer the corresponding intelligent services, including freephone, calling card and VPN, to the customers. As an integral part of the whole telecom network, intelligent network is going on well with PSTN, mobile communication networks, Internet and broadband networks. Interconnection between intelligent networks is expected.

One article details the system architecture and services of Chinese Intelligent Network (CIN) which should be of great interest to our readers. Another paper gives us insight into interconnection between different intelligent networks, an important move to make networks work well. We also showcase the achievements made by Zhongxing Telecom and Shanghai Bell in the columns of Application World and Enterprise Information.  

Intelligent building, as a result of system integration, came into being with the rapid progress in communications and computer technology. In spite of the different definitions, intelligent building is seen here and there in China since mid-1990s. Interesting variants, like smart housing, smart office and smart residential quarters, are also available.

In this issue, one author asserts that the key technologies should go to display of PC-TV, operating system, supplementary controller and Internet access module of PC-TV in a scheme to implement Homenet, a residential cabling system. The world-leading Siemon presents their cutting-edge Category 6 cabling system that merits.

Our December issue is a special issue to hail the 21st century. We shall present thought-provoking views from various experts. One article highlights the targets, supporting technologies, trend and hot topics to give readers a complete picture of development of computer networks towards the new century. Another paper reviews latest progress in communication technologies, made in recent years and gives an extensive description of the next generation communication technologies that will prevail in the new century.
