Three Pieces for SSMC- -

Siemens and China Unicom: fruitful cooperation
GSM network expansions in East, Central and West China
Contract signed for IN capacity expansion

The partnership between Siemens Shanghai Mobile Communications Ltd. (SSMC) and China Unicom scored remarkable achievements in July, with five contracts signed in a row (totaling 560 million RMB). The contracts involve capacity expansion for GSM networks by China Unicom branches in Shanghai, Fujian, Wuhan, Guizhou and Qinghai and the 4th phase IN (Intelligent Network) capacity expansion for Shanghai Unicom.

While implementing the upcoming 8th phase capacity expansion for Shanghai Unicom, SSMC will provide Shanghai Unicom new base stations of BS240 and eMicro, mainly used for GSM1800 network capacity, with a full coverage of urban Shanghai. The 4th phase IN capacity expansion for Shanghai Unicom will be under day in the same time. The project includes an additional set of SCP system, with additional capacity of 10 million. The project is expected to be complete by October this year. SSMC has been the supplier of the equipment used for capacity expansion in all the seven phases for the GSM network by Shanghai Unicom, and is the sole supplier of the equipment for the intelligent network. The long-standing partnership lays a solid foundation for deployment of a quality network and providing quality services to the vast number of customers.

As for Wuhan Unicor, in the 5th phase GSM900 network expansion and the 1st phase GSM1800 network expansion, SSMC will provide switching systems, BS240 base station systems and associated engineering services to cover the whole Wuhan. This is another key project for SSMC after all the four phases of GSM network expansion for the operator. Another contract concurrently signed is with Fujian Unicom, involving the 6th phase GSM900 network expansion. Siemens will conduct the project in Fuzhou, Xiamen and Quanzhou, where Fujian Unicom has a strong presence. The project as a whole will be complete in October 2001.

In West China, SSMC and China Unicom are big winners as well. SSMC signed contracts with Qinghai Unicom and Guizhou Unicom in the same time for capacity expansion of their GSM networks. The two contracts were worth 175 million RMB. Simens will supply the switching systems with the software of the latest SR8.0 version and base stations with the software of SR5.5 version. SSMC has been the main supplier with leading-edge technologies for capacity expansion in all the four phases for Guizhou Unicom. SSMC completed the capacity expansion in 1st and 2nd phases for Qinghai Unicom respectively in 1998 and 2000. Presently in all the autonomous prefectures and counties (Geermu excluded), even in highland areas such as Yushu and Guoluo with an elevation of 3000-4000 meters, Siemens spares no pains to support Qinghai Unicome and Guizhou Unicom with outstanding expertise and superior services. With this faithful partnership, Siemens is committed to creating a classic model for successful cooperation.

Siemens helps capacity expansion for Shanghai Mobile and Inner Mongolia Mobile
Debut of Power CP in China

SSMC recently signed contracts with Shanghai Mobile and Inner Mongolia Mobile for GSM network expansion. The contracts were worth over 1.06 billion RMB (or 128 million USD). After the massive capacity expansion in the 7th phase for Shanghai Mobile, SSMC will start capacity expansion in the 8th phase, and introduce network optimization. The both parties will work closely with each other to further improve the coverage quality of indoor networks, so as to deliver first-class communication services for successful APEC meetings in 2001.

For capacity expansion in the 8th phase, two sets of Power CP, the ultra high capacity switching system by Siemens will be put into use for the first time in China. Meanwhile, 230 sets of eMicro (new micro-cell base stations) and 160 sets of BS240 (base stations) will be deployed. Siemens was the first to launch a high performance Power CP in its evolution from GSM to 3G, delivering a core with ultra powerful performance and high reliability for switching systems. That brings the switching systems a leap of quality in terms of handling power and performance. Power CP improves the traffic processing capability of the switching systems up to 5 times and the enhanced performance will be sufficient until 2010, even for processing the "worst case" traffic models. The use of Power CP will allow capacity expansion in all the urban end offices of Shanghai Mobile, minimizing HLR relocation and MSC/VLR hand-off. As a result, traffic models will be effectively improved, so will the network quality. Meanwhile, the significant enhancement of the capacity and performance of MSC/VLR and HLR that Power CP brings means full preparations for introduction of a range of new services and evolution towards 3G. The whole project is to be complete at the end of November 2001. SSMC will also provide Shanghai Mobile two-and-a-half-month-long services for network optimization and technical support.

In addition to that, SSMC and Inner Mongolia Mobile signed a contract concerning the initial verification for the capacity expansion of the 5th phase and a contract for the 6th phase capacity expansion. SSMC will deploy GPRS networks and intelligent networks for the operator as well. In the 1st phase of GPRS network deployment for Inner Mongolia Mobile, the key equipment used in Huhehot and Baotou, where customers are concentrated, were supplied by SSMC, for all the functions of data download, roaming, etc. Siemens will also be in charge of upgrading all the 10 end offices of Inner Mongolia Mobile to SSP-enabled networks with IN features. SSMC will provide Inner Mongolia Mobile base station systems of eMicro, BS240, etc. for GSM network expansion and upgrade the software version to BR5.5. Huhehot, Baotou, Wuhai, Linhe, etc. where customers are concentrated, will be involved. SSMC has been a strong supporter for Inner Mongolia Mobile in all the five phases of GSM capacity expansion.
