Jordan Chan is a Hong Kong actor and musician. A member of the Hakka ethnic group, he was born in Hong Kong on July 8, 1967. His father chose his Chinese name. A fortuneteller also chose a name for him but he never changed it.
He once worked at a hair salon, a restaurant and a construction site. He got his start by enrolling in the TVB Dancers' Training Class in 1985 and gradually moved his way up the ranks from there. Soon after graduation, he joined a few of the studio's troupes that would accompany popular singers during their live performances. He worked with artists such as Alan Tam, Leslie Cheung, Anita Mui and Sandy Lam until 1992, when he formed a musical group called Wind, Fire, and Ocean with fellow dancers. He was invited by a producer to make a record of his own. The album was a hit, and like many hot young singers, his managers wanted to push him into acting as well.
In 1994, he made his film debut with "Twenty Something". He has since received several Hong Kong Film Award nominations. With 1996's "Young and Dangerous", he established himself as a mainstay of the triad genre. The film was a huge success, and led to nine sequels and spin-offs before the series concluded in 2000. He starred as Kyouichi Sudo in "Initial D". He has been in around fifty films. While this may seem like a lot, it is the typical output for an "idol" (an artist who works on movies, television and music) these days in Hong Kong.
Musically, he is known for bringing a hip-hop flavor to Cantopop. With his recent releases beginning around 2002, he has rapped and added hip-hop beats to his music. His hip-hop style has brought him new fans, although some Hong Kong fans have accused him of acting "black". He continues to incorporate R&B and hip-hop sounds into his music today. Recently, he returns with his first full-length album "Exclusive Memory" in two years. The album features nine Mandarin and two Cantonese songs.
On August 7, 2006, he was injured when his car flipped over on a busy city highway. He suffered head and neck injuries when his car rolled after he lost control of it trying to avoid another car that cut into his lane. He was taken to the Prince of Wales Hospital and released after treatment. Police gave him a breath test that proved negative.
He has gone through a number of name changes over the years. His ID card bears the name "Andy" and he was known variously as "Donald" and "Calvin" (because Calvin Klein was very popular back then) during his dancing days. He finally settled on the name Jordan because he was a fan of Michael Jordan.
