Amber Kuo

April 27, 2008

Amber Kuo (born on February 19, 1986) is a Taiwanese pop singer, widely known for her cute image with mature and powerful vocal.

She is currently a fourth-year student in National Taipei University (Taiwan's top university) pursuing a degree in Social Work.

She started her career most notably for starring at rumored boyfriend Taiwanese singer-songwriter Tank's music video "When We Were Young". She was also featured in Stefanie Sun's music video "Rainy Day" and F.I.R guitarist Real's music video.

She released her debut album "Invisible Superman" at the end of 2007. Its No.1 hit single "I Need You" is a song full of feeling, deriving a 21-year-old teen's attitude towards love (be it sad or happy), beauty with an additional courage and effort to strive for success. It is her first Mandarin song and the gateway towards her success in the Mandopop scene. It is a light mid-tempo ballad, a nice choice of both words and chords. She introduced herself to the Taiwan music scene with her first English song "I Remember", a song she wrote and composed. It is the most moving of the album. She sang in English with a soft yet modulated voice, and with a slight Chinese accent. The title track "Invisible Superman" has a great music background (wonderful electric guitar) and is well balanced: beautiful resuming after instrumentals, and good mix of soft stanzas with a powerful chorus. The fast and cute "A Little Faster" would remind you of Avril Lavigne, because of its boldness. She alternates soft and intense in a smooth way in the forceful ballad "Sincerely Think of You", the same in "Invisible Superman". "My Future Style" is really rocky, nice beat, and lets her voice give its best, and sounds really close to Angela Chang's.

Her style could be compared to Angela Chang for the voice with a similar tone, and as powerful, and to F.I.R for the music. Her pop rock is like a breath of fresh air, especially if you are sick of ballads. She is also good at conveying feelings through her voice, whether it is a sad or happy one.

She has both the looks and the talent, capturing the beauty, strength, and sentiments of a young woman at the brink of adulthood. Out of 2007's many female newcomers, she stood out with her distinctive voice, which has a sweet yet powerful quality that reminds of divas like Angela Chang and Stefanie Sun.

Her voice also reminds me of the Japanese singer YUI. I think she has plenty of potentials. She plays piano and guitar and she must be the female equivalent of Leehom Wang, with 1600 out of 1600 on SAT!
