Study Alone

October 25, 2007

Do you prefer to study alone or in a group? Each has its own benefits, and it depends on the subject and whom you are studying with. Furthermore you also need to look at the task that you have to do. Reading text, writing an essay, learning some words, these activities you better do it alone. However, if you need to do a research or write a report, it is better to separate the tasks and carry it out. Of course you might do the given task on your own, and you will face fewer distractions.

When you find studying alone much better for you, maybe you get distracted really easily, and most of the time you would rather joke and talk with your friends than studying with them. I definitely prefer studying alone as I like to set my own pace and I like to have music played in the background.

When you say studying in a group is better, perhaps it lets your mind speak. If you do not know something, there is a chance that someone else will. It is helpful the other way around too, because if you help some people and have to explain it to them, you reiterate what you have learned and embed it deeper into your memory. And if you can explain it completely then that means you know the stuff well. More people mean more interaction and more effective, but the guys should be really serious. If you find the right group of people to study with, then studying in a group is much better, as you can get "motivation" from your friends. When you see them so absorbed in studying, you are also "motivated" to do the same thing.

Studying alone, you tend to miss something. Scientists even discovered that Chinese kids are smarter because they study in groups. Obviously, if you are to study in groups, you will keep on working and studying harder to catch up on the ones smarter than you. If you are to study alone, you will not improve because there is nobody you could look up to and catch up to.

Some cannot really choose one form or the other. When they study alone, they can concentrate more and cover more material in a same period of time. And when they study with a group, things they do not understand can be clarified. As both is good for them, they usually do both, go over the materials alone first and then study with a group of friends to discuss what they understand. Such a right combination helps to resolve any doubts.
