Kenji Wu

October 17, 2007

Kenji Wu (born on October 18, 1979 in Kaohsiung) is a singer-actor from Taiwan. He made his debut in 2000 with his sophomore album "Tomorrow, Alone". Despite the involvement of top producers, the album only received lukewarm response. However, this gave him opportunities to act in idol dramas such as "Peach Girl" and "Moonlight Forest".

With an intense passion for music, he made a comeback to the music industry in November 2004 with a self-titled album, released by Seed Music. He wrote all ten songs in the album. Critics around Asia gave highly positive reviews. The hit song "Kenji Wu" cleverly incorporated the impersonations of well-known singers such as A-do, Leehom Wang and Shin Band.

He returned in October 2005 with a new album titled "The Kenji Show". Working on a theme of having fun, the album comprises of songs with his style of simple yet intriguing lyrics. "Tongue-tied" became a karaoke favorite. On top of penning his own lyrics and melodies, he was also the producer of this album.

He wrote all songs in another album entitled "A General Order" (2006), showing his creativity. He experimented with the Chinese music style (combining ancient Chinese folk music with hip-hop and dance music), therefore the title song was written in that way.

With his star rising, he snagged several endorsements, ranging from fashion to beauty and optical products. The filial son remits a big part of his ernings to his mother. Unfortunately, he met with a group of gangsters waiting for him at an autograph session. They turned out to be debt collectors who tried to make him repay the debts owed by his father, apparently due to a business failure.

He is good-looking and really talented. I always admire artists who write their own songs. In his own words, he is a "sinner in love". He is chauvinistic, opinionated and direct. But his biggest sin yet is neglecting his ex-girlfriend and always putting his dreams and his friends above her. He initiated their final break-up after a four-year on-off relationship. However, he and his ex remain good friends, and she sometimes gives him feedback on his songs.
