Copying Homework

October 11, 2007

The purpose of homework is to force you to study the class material on a daily basis and prepares you for tests. Many students at one point or another have copied their friend's homework for whatever reason. Some always do the copying and even get higher grades. It seems to be very hard to accept. However, they might just be lazy or busy, but not stupid. If they can copy your homework and still do well on a test, then they know the material well already.

Some think copying of homework is okay, as long as it is not done on a regular basis. But it does get annoying if they copy from you all the time, because you would get really frustrated when you do all the work but they get the credit when they do not even put in one ounce of effort at all.

Some never give out their homework. In their mind, copying homework is being a party to plagiarism, cheating them out of their future, and lying to the teachers. Their integrity is more important than making friends or enemies or even hurting their feelings.

Other students have a bad dilemma at school. Teachers are more important to them than all these false friends who just want to copy homework, they do not want to lose their trust, but they do not want to make enemies and rise against anyone either.

Strict teachers watch good students very carefully. They check many papers to see if they are copied, and if they are, the caught will receive a zero and a detention. They even developed stricter rules on the copy fraud.

When I was in school, I very often had my classmates ask to copy off me. Though I would try to help them to understand the process if they asked, they lacked such an interest. On the contrary, I would find any chance to try more exercises, even though it was during the Cultural Revolution!
