Everyone has to dress nice. When people take one look at you, they judge you by lots of things – your appearance (what you look like and what you wear), your manner (the way you act) and others, so you had better dress nice because it explains a lot to others. In corporate environment, you should dress more business-like. It is much neater and nicer if you dress up, otherwise the place looks really trashy and not as many customers come.
In some organizations, the dress code is very strict. You have to dress up to go to work. You wear a uniform or a suit and the color is always dark. If you have to wear professional and stay cool, you have to update your image, and spend a lot of $$$ to buy new stuff. Your boss would issue you a warning letter if you go to work without putting your tie on. Anyway, wearing those clothes makes you a member of higher class.
But other companies are pretty relaxed about dress code. As the policy is to dress smart, you have the rights to be comfortable and wear even slacks, jeans and tennis shoes. In some rare cases, you even see people in T-shirts, shorts, tank tops and sandals. Definitely, there are some people who have the best job in the world, working in the pajamas all day!
However, it depends on whether you have any important function or meeting. Usually you are required to dress appropriately if customers are visiting or you are visiting them. In summer when energy saving is encouraged, you might be allowed to dress a bit more casual.
In our company, we are asked to wear suits from Monday to Thursday, but we have dress-down Friday, when we could wear business casual stuff. But I like to have a choice for my tastes and wear whatever I want at my workplace all the time!
