Karen Mok

October 18, 2006

Born Karen Joy Morris in Hong Kong, actress and singer Karen Mok is Eurasian as her mother is quarter-Persian, quarter-German on her father's side, half-Chinese from her mother's; her father is half-Welsh on his father's side, half-Chinese from his mother's. And she is multilingual, speaking fluent English, Cantonese, Mandarin, Japanese, Italian and French. She has a sister of writer/producer, Trevor Morris.

She attended Diocesan Girls' School, Hong Kong from primary to secondary education. Her initial bid for stardom revolved not around her acting talent - but her vocal skills. Following her studies of two years at Italy's United World College majoring in Italian literature, the aspiring vocalist recorded numerous demo tapes, eventually landing a coveted role in the London stage production of Miss Saigon. Though the prospect of a Hong Kong recording contract may have momentarily lured her away from the stage, a lukewarm reception and middling sales soon prompted the aspiring singer to return to England to complete her education at the University of London. In the years that followed, she opted to pursue a career in film, and an early role opposite Stephen Chow in A Chinese Odyssey almost instantaneously cemented her reputation as a talent to watch for. Her performance as a shrieking, fright-wig-wearing punker in the following year's Fallen Angels earned her a Hong Kong Film Award for Best Supporting Actress. With her role as Stephen Chow's unsightly muse in God of Cookery, she was equally effective and unrecognizable - her seemingly hypnotic lazy eye compelling audiences into involuntary fits of laughter. A hilarious performance in Viva Erotica was quick to follow, with subsequent work in the action film Black Mask offering international exposure.

She is sexy and her long legs are believed to be most beautiful. She is not only a top model and celebrated movie attraction but also owns an amazing singing talent. Her songs range wide and deep. Her singles hit success may be almost entirely Asian-based, but her style and selection is accessible to pop audiences from every corner of the globe. She is a winner of multiples awards, well versed in Chinese dance and also plays a variety of musical instrument including zither. Those are some of the components that she stands out from other Hong Kong celebrities. She always intrigues me with her experimental music and her confidence, passion and her different approach to the media. Her songs that I like best include Hiroshima Mon Amour, Summer Fruits and Love.
