Vicki Zhao is a Chinese film actress and pop singer, born on March 12, 1976 in Wuhu, Anhui and raised there. Her father designed appliances and her mother was a teacher. They were educated people and Vicki was raised to believe that if she did not get an education, she would not be worth anything. She graduated from an elementary school and a high school under a teacher's college. In 1993, a filming crew arrived in Wuhu looking for extras for a film starring Gong Li. There, Vicki received her first experience in film. After deciding to pursue an acting career, she enrolled in Shanghai's Xie Jin Star Academy. In 1996, she received first class results in her entrance exam to Beijing Film Academy's Performance Institute. She graduated from there in 2000.
After playing minor roles in various series and films, she received her first leading role in a series called Sisters in Beijing. There, Chiung Yao, a famous Taiwanese romance writer, who was looking for actors and actresses, spotted her and commented that Vicki was a little chubby but talented. In 1997, Vicki had lost some weight and was offered one of the leading roles in Chiung Yao's book-turned-television series Princess Pearl, cast as Little Swallow. The series was a huge hit in China and with Chinese overseas. Nothing in the series beguiled viewers so much as the almond-eyed girl in the title role. After Princess Pearl was broadcast and enjoyed surprisingly high ratings, Vicki quickly rose to prominence. In 1999, she became the youngest actress to win the Golden Eagle Awards (China's Emmy) for "Best Actress". In the same year, she also entered the music industry and released her first album, Swallow. Following this, she continually to star in a number of successful television series and movies and released a number of well-sold albums. In 2001, she filmed another series written by Chiung Yao titled Romance in the Rain. She has achieved international stardom with roles in "So Close" and "Shaolin Soccer".
When she donned a Japanese military flag for a fashion shoot, her career began to fizzle. At a concert, a construction worker, who said his grandparents had been killed during the war, tackled her and smeared her face with feces.
Afterwards, she began focusing on filming movies and worked with many prestigious directors. She won many awards and she was ranked one of the sexiest women by FHM magazines.
Vicki is versatile. She studied playing piano for seven years, and passed the top-level test. She also practiced Tibetan dancing for three years. Though she is one of Chinese directors' favorite actresses today, she has enrolled for postgraduate study at the Beijing Film Academy, focusing on directing, which will help develop her future career. She is setting a good example to her peers and fans, furthering her education to pursue other avenue in the entertainment circle. She is the best role model because she does not feel ashamed to go back being a student although her name is very big now.
