Still Fantasy

September 18, 2006

Jay Chou is the so-called "King of Mando-pop". It was my son, who has been into Jay's ballads for quite some time, provoked my interest in this "alternative" pop singer. However, my son's campus life keeps him away from the pop world and he was totally taken aback at his sheer ignorance of Jay's new release.

Jay is a versatile artist. Yet, his best love is music and he will never forget his music fans. Now, he is back with his latest album Still Fantasy, an echo to Fantasy, his second album (released on September 18, 2001) that made him a superstar. As usual, his "trademark" style skillfully incorporates R&B and hip-hop as well as other music genres to weave a melodious sound carpet. As a pop music experimentalist, his latest shot is to team up with veteran Taiwanese singer Fei Yu Ching, an "evergreen" for his easy listening extremely popular not only in Taiwan, but also in Chinese mainland and overseas. Fei, a household name in Taiwan with his melodious ballads and the golden voice of nostalgic classics, collaborates with pop giant Jay for the first time. The duet "Faraway" is hauntingly beautiful. Surely, Fei is a better singer, but Jay's voice is just soothing. Another interesting song in the album is "Listen to Mama".

It was said that this album is not due to be released until September 9, but Alfa had decided to release it four days earlier thanks to a leakage of their source CD. Disloyal workers at a record production facility in Chinese mainland stole master copies of the album for their own profit, and sold them to disreputable, illegal websites, with the result that the songs had already appeared online before the album had been released.
